The ACPHS Women's Soccer team fought hard on Sunday, but fell to the SUNY-ESF Mighty Oaks 3-0 in the HVIAC Tournament Championship Game. This was the third straight year that the Panthers faced the Oaks in the final, with the Oaks winning all three. Albany's finishes the HVIAC season with an overall record of 8-5-0, while SUNY-ESF will take their 7-4-0 record into the 2018 USCAA Women's Soccer National Tournament.
The Panthers got off to a slow start in this one, conceding the game's opening goal in just the fifth minute. ESF's Marissa Pompeii found fellow forward Lindsay Eberhart after leading a counterattack that started inside of their own half, and Eberhart put her shot just above the reach of sophomore goalkeeper
Gabriella Evangelista (Warwick, NY / Warwick Valley High) for her first goal of the year.
This turned out to be the game-winner for the Mighty Oaks, as they held ACPHS to just six total shot attempts in the game by dominating possession for large parts of it. They added a second goal just after halftime, when a defensive mistake by the Panthers let junior midfielder Alyssa Hughes in on goal. Hughes bested Evangelista to bring her season-tally to six, and ESF was able to see the game out from there. Senior Rachael Truska scored the Mighty Oaks' third goal in the 65
th minute off of an assist from Hughes, and ESF was able to secure their third straight conference championship.
Four Panthers were named to the All-HVIAC team after the game: Evangelista and seniors
Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas),
Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa), and
Cora Bruno (Margaretville, NY / Margaretville Central). Tersegno also brought home the 2018 HVIAC Player of the Year Award, leading the conference in both goals and assists with 13 and 10 respectively. For ESF, team captain Sarah Wohlfahrt was named the 2018 HVIAC Tournament MVP.
The Panthers season may not end here, as they have a chance at an at-large bid to the USCAA National Championship Tournament in Virginia Beach, VA, which will be announced on Tuesday, October 30
th.
