Men's Soccer fell to SUNY Delhi last night by a score of 2-1. The Panthers are now 4-5 overall, while the Broncos improved to 8-2.
APCHS tested the Bronco goal early, when
Noah Keith (Rotterdam, NY / Cba) rocketed a driven effort at goal in the 6
th minute which forced Delhi keeper Marcos Andrino into a diving save. The Panthers also had a penalty shout in the tenth minute when freshman striker
Josh Barlow (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) looked to be bundled over from behind in the box, but the referee didn't see it that way.
The game had a controversial moment a few minutes later, when Delhi was awarded a penalty following a foul by freshman
Frank Cassano on Delhi sophomore Brody Rettle. But before the Broncos took the spot kick, the referee consulted with the line judge who did enough to persuade him not to give the foul, thus resulting in a goal kick for ACPHS.
The Panthers almost mastered their own downfall again in the 25
th minute, when some sloppy passing gave Rettle a chance to volley the ball into an empty net, but he was unable to keep the shot below the crossbar.
Delhi finally found the opening goal in the 33
rd minute, when they hit the Panthers with a blistering counterattack after Albany committed men forward for a corner. Freshman winger Juan Velez picked off the low corner and sent a pass to his fellow winger Alhasane Sako. Sako shielded two Albany defenders before beating freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Hobson (Red Hook, NY / Red Hook High School) at his near post.
The Panthers created some chances to close the half, specifically two from long free kicks into the box by Keith, but they were unable to find an equalizer. Albany went into the break getting outshot 7-6 but leading in shots on goal 3-1.
Sako had an opportunity to double his team's advantage in the 55
th minute, but is effort rattled the post keeping the Panthers down just one.
The Panthers finally broke through from a set piece in the 71
st minute. Junior
Austin Myers (Morrisonville, NY / Saranac High) floated a free kick to the back post that found the right foot of Kieth who was unmarked. The midfielder took one touch and beat Andrino to his right for his 4
th goal of the year.
The tie was short lived though as Delhi regained the lead in the 76
th minute. It was Sako this time who provided the assists, finding Rettle who calmly slotted his shot past Hobson for the 2-1 lead. The Broncos would see the game out from there despite a few late chances for the Panthers. In the end, ACPHS was outshot 18-11, and would have loved to do better with the shots they had.
The Panthers will look to bounce back next week when they travel to Ulster County Community College on Tuesday, October 9
th at 4pm.
