ACPHS Guts Out 1-0 Win Over #3 NHTI

#9 ACPHS nailed down a 1-0 win over the #3 ranked NHTI Lynx on Saturday, with senior Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) scoring the game's only goal. The Paanthers improved their overall record to 4-3, while the Lynx suffered their first loss of the year and are now 4-1.

ACPHS had the lion's share of the possession in the first half, and with it they created a fair amount of scoring opportunities. The first came in the 10th minute, when Benson went on one of her trademark long runs in behind the NHTI defense. She had fellow senior Molly Mancini (Galway, NY / Galway) open if she had chosen to square the ball, but she elected to shoot, spraying her effort just wide of the goal. Mancini did have two great chances to score before the ACPHS goal, finding herself one-on-one with Lynx keeper Tess Whitmer in the 25th and 28th minutes, but she was unable to put either shot on target.

Benson finally broke through for the Panthers in the 36th minute, when a slick passing move put her in on goal once again. Senior Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas) picked up the ball in the opposition's half and found junior midfielder Sydney Rule (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa). Rule played a first-time ball past the NHTI back line Benson chased down and slotted past Whitmer for her team-leading 11th goal of the season. The goal was costly though for Albany, as Benson came up lame after the play and had to be helped off the field.

The Panthers outshot the New Hampshire 13-6 in the first half, and it was more of the same after the break as they continued to control the ball for the 2nd 45 minutes. Without Benson, Albany was unable to grab a 2nd goal, but the Panther defense stood strong, only allowing three NHTI attempts at goal in the half. Sophomore Gabriella Evangelista (Warwick, NY / Warwick Valley High) played all 90 minutes and made four saves, improving her season record to 3-2.

The Panthers are right back at it today, September 30th, .resuming conference play against the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels at 11:30 AM.
