Men take third, Women sixth at Nationals, both win YSCC

Springfield, MA - The track season ended Saturday at American International College in Springfield, MA for the USCAA National Invitational. The weather was all over the place throughout the day, but that didn't stop the Panthers from having themselves a good day. 

Due to weather, the Pole Vault event got moved to the day before, where the men's team saw two athletes travel to Massachusetts to get marks in the event. Karol Wroblewski (Wethersfield, CT) and Drew Miller (Glade Spring, VA) made the trip to start the men's side off right. Wroblewski ended up medaling in the event taking home third overall, and setting a new school record in the event with a 2.85m jump. Miller also scored with a sixth place finish.

Onto Saturday, the day was kicked off with a combined men's and women's 10k run. Tyler Buffolino (Ridge, NY) and Marina Duszak (New Milford, CT) were the first Panthers on the track to compete in this event. Both were able to take home a fifth place finish, and a school record on each side to start the day for the Panthers. Both were able to also take home the YSCC title in this event as well. Continuing on the distance side was Morgan Scarzafava (Middletwon, NY) making an attempt to repeat her title as Steeplechase champion. With the rain starting to come down during the race, it did not stop Scarzafava as she won the race with a new personal best, and another National Champion medal for the second straight year. 

Moving on to the sprint side of the events, the 4x100 meter relay was the first event for sprinters, and we kicked off with the women's 4x100. The relay composed of Ayo Momoh (Abuja, Nigeria), Jackie Ngyuen (Norwood, NY), Ka'ena Kehano (Wailuku, HI), and Erica Scholl (Frankfort, NY) were able to improve on their time to take home the YSCC crown in the event. As for the men's 4x100 relay, made up of Sam Rowley (Queensbury, NY), Jay Carlson (Saratoga, NY), Chuck Middleton (Syracuse, NY) and Ryan Haak (Depew, NY) they were able to string together to set a new school record and finish third is the USCAA. This performance also won them the YSCC title as well in the event. Finally, the men's 4x400m made up of Haak, Middleton, Nigro, and Dean set a new school record and finished fourth in the USCAA. The women's 4x400m relay made up of Kayliegh Simpson (Utica, NY), Kehano, Scholl, and Scarzafava finished with a sixth place finish in the USCAA. 

In the individual sprinting events, Ryan Haak was looking for more after his performance in the 4x100. Haak got through the prelims with ease, and in the finals was the only runner under 11 seconds, winning by almost half a second. Haak then went on later to win the 200m dash by almost half a second as well making him the sprinting champion in both the USCAA and YSCC. In the hurdles, Dhatri Sangasani (Scarsdale, NY) found herself winning the YSCC title, and finishing fifth in the USCAA. Ethan Nigro (Kingston, NY) found himself as the king of hurdles in the USCAA taking home two gold medals in the 110 hurdles and 400m hurdles. The 110 hurdles he won with ease with the second place person finishing almost a full whole second behind him. The 400m hurdles, he continued to make his mark setting a new school record with a sub 59 second performance. Michael Dean (New Windsor, NY) also scored in the 400m hurdles in what was a close race between third and eighth. Ayo Momoh also improved her 200m time with a great final race to top off a great season full of personal records for Momoh. 

Onto the throws, as the Panthers throwing events had a massive day throughout all events. To start Wroblewski got new personal bests in the discus, and shot put. Howie Kelley (got himself into scoring position in discus with a new personal best. Richard Serafin (Oneonta, NY) had a massive day for himself getting personal bests in javelin, hammer, and shot put. His shot put personal best got himself a tie for third place in the USCAA. Timothy Hudson Jr. (Hanford, CA) won three USCAA National titles in all three of his throwing events and finally hitting over 40m in each of those three events for the first time in his career. He broke his school record in the hammer throw with the final plus 40m throw, to add to his fantastic days on the throwing side.

The women's throws saw a massive day as well with all the throwers getting new personal bests in their events. Samantha Marion (Ovid, NY) added to what was already an amazing season for her. She added on to her hammer throw school record and got a fourth place finish, while also being the YSCC champion. She also finished with personal bests in discus, and shot put. Keyanna Clark (Cobleskill, NY) got personal bests in the hammer, and javelin to improve her bests from a great season. Audrey DeGraw (Parish, NY) got another personal best in hammer to finish another season full of personal bests for the Sophomore. Aditi Rathor (North Attleboro, MA) continued her season of personal bests with two more in the hammer, and shot put. Finally, the women's throws had another personal best performance from Jaiah Barrett (Bridgeport, CT) in hammer, and shot put. 

Finally, on the jumps side of things, Ethan Nigro continued his long day with Long jump and Triple jump medaling in both of these events as well. Nigro took home third overall in both events to add to his fantastic day. Hudson Jr. also competed in Triple jump helping add to the men's side with a fourth place finish to add to his already amazing day at Nationals. Dhatri Sangasani finished with a third place overall preformance in Triple jump ending her day with another YSCC title in one of her events. 

On top of all the medals the Panthers got this year, the team results were in with the Men's team taking home third place, and the Women's team taking home sixth place. After the awarding of the USCAA awards, they moved on to YSCC awards, with a twist of naming a YSCC All-Conference team. On the men's side, Tyler Buffolino, Ethan Nigro, Ryan Haak, and Timothy Hudson Jr. were named the Men's All-Conference members. On the women's side, Morgan Scarzafava, Marina Duszak, Dhatri Sangasani, and Samantha Marion were the Women's All-Conference members. Both teams also walked away with their second straight YSCC title, and Head Coach Samson Dikeman won both Coach of the Year honors. 

The Panthers season is over, but they will do some summer training, work in the fall, and be back next Winter at eyes on the USCAA Championship next Spring.
