Marcy, NY - Rain dampened everything but the mood at SUNY Poly on Saturday as a new Cross Country season opened. The Panthers kicked off the season with the Short Course Invy, women's running 4000m and men, 6000.
The women's race started off misty and ended with rain soaking the Poly trails. Freshman,
Ophelia Breen (Peru, NY) led the way for the Panthers with a time of 18:31 good for an 11th place finish in the deep D3 field. Junior
Kayleigh Simpson (Utica, NY) came through next in 34th place, with
Krystal Ogoke (Bowie, MD), and
Giselle Campbell (Syracuse, NY) finishing 36th and 37th respectively to round out the squad.
The men's race stopped before it started as lighting struck and forced everyone inside for a delay. With an hour passed the men's races kicked off.
Tyler Buffolino (Ridge, NY) led the Panther men with a gritty performance to finish the race in 24:44. Sophomore
Harrison Matthews (Peru, NY) finished closely behind in 24:55.
Matthew Shakow (Saratoga, NY),
Kevin Andrews (Buffalo, NY), and
Andy Tran (Vietnam) were the next three across the line finishing in 26:39, 28:51, and 28:57 respectively.
Daniel Le and
Daniel Okuji made their XC debuts finishing in 31:20 and 38:40.
The Panthers get right back to the action with a quick trip down RT. 88 next Saturday to compete at the Steven A. Warde Invite at SUNY Cobleskill.
