BOX SCORE
Albany, N.Y. – Senior forward
Casey Redfern (Binghamton, N.Y.) banked in a desperation three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences men's basketball team (4-4) a thrilling 94-93 double overtime victory over visiting SUNY Canton (0-7) Saturday evening at Albert M. White Gymnasium. Redfern finished with 35 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and four steals for the Panthers, who never held a lead in either extra session until the final shot.
Down 67-60 with 6:43 left in regulation, ACPHS staged an 8-0 run over the next 1:42 to take its first lead since midway through the first half. The Panthers and Kangaroos then traded baskets into the final seconds as senior forward
Ryan McVaigh (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) made one of two free throws to put the home team ahead 78-75 with 20 seconds to go. Khalil Bratton buried a three-pointer from the right corner on the ensuing SUNY Canton possession to force overtime, but far more fireworks were in store.
The Kangaroos got off to a hot start in the first extra session and led by eight points with just over a minute remaining when Redfern buried a triple, stole the inbounds pass, made a layup, stole a second inbounds pass and made two free throws after being fouled to draw the Panthers all the way back within one at 87-86 with 48 seconds to play.
Bratton made one free throw on the other end to push the lead back to two points, but Redfern struck again with a jumper from the right baseline with four seconds left to send the game to a second overtime tied at 88 apiece.
In the second overtime, Bratton tipped home a Khalid Vaughn miss with 2:04 left that put the Kangaroos back up by two; neither team would score again until eight seconds remained. Sophomore Panthers guard
Justin Bressack (Woodstock, N.Y.) was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made one of three free throws while on the next possession Bratton made one of his two free throws for a 93-91 Kangaroo lead with approximately six and a half seconds showing on the clock.
Without a timeout, ACPHS rushed the ball up court; Bressack flipped the ball back to Redfern, who tossed up a prayer from three steps beyond the left wing through two Kangaroos that banked home as the buzzer sounded for a 94-93 victory.
All of Redfern's statistics represented season highs; he shot 12-23 from the floor and 5-14 from distance. McVaigh finished with a double-double as well, notching 17 points and 12 rebounds while junior guard
John Tremblay (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored 17 points of his own before fouling out in the first overtime. Sophomore guard
Desmond Henderson (Middletown, N.Y.) had an excellent game for ACPHS as well, ending up with nine points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
SUNY Canton was led by Sam Annorh's 27 points and nine assists; Bratton put up an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double while Vaughn (16 points, nine rebounds, six steals, five assists) and Scott Bartenstein (15 points) also reached double figures for the Kangaroos.
The Panthers won't have much time to bask in tonight's victory as they hit the road to Boston, Massachusetts to battle Fisher College at 2:00 pm tomorrow afternoon. Tonight's game marked the end of a five-game homestand and ACPHS's last home contest of the 2013 calendar year.
