Box Score BOX SCOREAlbany, NY - ACPHS led for over thirty minutes last night, but ended up on the wrong end of a 73-70 final in their loss against #9 SUNY Delhi. Albany fell to 7-10 with their second straight loss, while the Broncos improved to 16-10.
The game started fast, with the teams trading punches throughout the opening minutes. ACPHS was able to hold a lead for the final 14:49 of the first, but the Broncos kept it close the whole time. The first highlight from the game came from sophomore
Philip Chun (Cohoes, NY), who drove to the lane, survived an attempted strip, and threw the ball over his head with his back to the basket for the circus lay-in to put the Panthers up six with seven left in the half. ACPHS was looking good when they opened up an eight point lead after a pair of free throws by senior
Michael Beyer with 55 seconds left in the half. The Panthers then gave up six points in quick succession, including a buzzer-beating three by Zach Hall, which cut their lead to just two going into the half. Two Panthers were already in double-figures at this point: sophomore
Alex Johnson (Malone, NY) with 13 and sophomore
Brandon Votra (Saint Regis Falls, NY) with 12.
The second half was just as back-and-forth as the first, featuring five lead changes but no lead by either team bigger than six. A layup by Votra saw the Panthers up 61-56 with five minutes left, but couldn't hold on as they conceded layups to Chiamaka Browne, Cesar Castro, and Lateek Anderson. Down one, the Broncos' Trevor Smith fouled senior
David Mcentee (Cazenovia, NY) and gave him a chance to put ACPHS ahead. Mcentee hit the first, but missed the second and Delhi could not get a shot up in the closing seconds. In OT, the Panthers allowed 11 points but weren't able to keep pace as the Broncos scored on all but one of their possessions in the period. ACPHS had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but
Alex Johnson's three was off by quite a margin and the Panthers' upset bid was dashed. Votra led all scorers with 24, chipping in four assists, four blocks, and 12 rebounds. Johnson finished with 21 and four assists of his own. For Delhi, Lateek Anderson scored 21 with three blocks, and Cesar Castro had a line of 16 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Delhi's bench outscored that of ACPHS 20 to two, which was largely the difference in the game.
The Panther picked up a victory vs. Paul Smith's college today and will be back home against Landmark College on Saturday, February 13
th at 1pm. #9 SUNY Delhi heads to Mercy College this Tuesday, February 9
th at 7pm.
