ALBANY, NY — The ACPHS Panthers grinded out the first half, before scoring twice in the second to gain a comfortable win over the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings. With the victory, ACPHS improves to 2-1, while HVCC remains winless at 0-3.

Sophomore Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) had a great chance to open the scoring in the 3rd minute, after being put through on goal by fellow sophomore Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas). Only six yards out with just HVCC keeper Madelyn Welch to beat, Benson dragged her shot wide of the post. Back to back chance from the Vikings' Elisabeth Morehouse put some pressure on the Panthers, but freshman Sally Slowinski (Colrain, MA / Mohawk Trail) saved one and watched one go just wide to keep HVCC off the board. Benson and Tersegno continued peppering the Vikings' goal throughout the half, but it was sophomore Molly Mancini (Galway, NY / Galway) who came up big for the Panthers in the 35th minute. Junior Kennedy Rives (Austin, TX / Shenedehowa), a late addition to the starting lineup, put a teasing ball across the face of goal which Welch believed she had a chance to collect. Welch fumbled the ball, allowing Mancini the chance to beat her defender in a foot-race and poke the ball into the back of the net for her first goal this season.

Tersegno would not be denied early in the second half, when Benson was able to force a turnover and slide the ball past the defense for Tersegno to run after. The sophomore phenom made no mistake in front of goal, rolling the ball past Welch and netting her fifth goal in three games. Sophomore Cora Bruno (Margaretville, NY / Margaretville Central) then finished off the Vikings in the 56th minute, scoring from 12 yards out off of another Benson assist. The ACPHS defense recorded their second consecutive clean sheet, and saw out the victory relatively without issue.

Benson and Tersegno each recorded five shots on goal to lead the Panthers, while HVCC only managed five shots on goal in total. Madelyn Welch made ten saves for the Vikings, while Slowinski came up with four of her five saves in the second half to go to 2-1. The Panthers led in both corners, 10-1, and shot attempts, 27-12.
This weekend, ACPHS will look to continue their winning ways with a pair of games in Concord, New Hampshire. On Saturday the 10th they face Holyoke at 1pm, and on Sunday the 11th they face Massasoit at 10:30am. HVCC goes back home to face Clinton on Saturday.
