Junior forward
Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) rose to the occasion last night, scoring both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Panther's 2-1 comeback victory over the SUNY Delhi Broncos. ACPHS remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0, while Delphi drops to 2-3.
The game started slow for both teams, as neither could create many chances in the first half which ended scoreless. SUNY Delhi's Lenore Aponte created the best chance for either team in the half when she drove from defense up the right wing and put in a great service for Bronco striker Katie Herba. Herba beat her marker and had a free header, but pushed it just wide of sophomore
Sally Slowinski's (Colrain, MA / Mohawk Trail) goal. Junior
Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas) also had a few runs at goal in the half, sending two decent chances wide of net in the closing ten minutes.
Things heated up in the second half though, with Bronco defender Stephanie Mason breaking the deadlock just seven minutes in. After a well-worked corner saw an
Erin Tersegno shot sail just above the crossbar, Herba picked up the ball off the goal kick and beat three ACPHS defenders before sending a stinging shot right at Slowiniski. Slowinski saved it well, but was beaten to the ensuing rebound by Mason who netted her third goal of the year. Delphi held their 1-0 advantage for 20 minutes until Tersegno and Benson combined to knot the score at 1. Tersegno picked up a long ball over the Delphi defense and raced to the byline. She sent a shot low and hard that Bronco goalie Jacqueline Slentz let slip right past her outstretched arms. Benson was on hand to tap the ball into the empty net, and the teams would head into overtime shortly thereafter.
Benson, not content to just tie the game, finished off the Broncos with a scintillating solo run of her own. Off a pass from Tersegno, Benson burst past the Delphi defense and fired a left-footed shot into the upper far corner of the net only one minute and ten seconds into the period. It was Benson's seventh goal in three games, while Tersegno picked up her third and fourth assists on the night. In the win, Slowinski saved five shots and moved to 3-0 along with the Panthers.
ACPHS begins HVIAC play this weekend, with a road trip to SUNY-ESF on Saturday, September 15
