The #1-ranked SUNY Delhi Broncos bested the Panthers on Thursday, scoring the game's only goal in the 2nd half to win 1-0. Delhi remains undefeated at 9-0-0, while the Panthers are now 5-4-0.
ACPHS created the first chance of the game in the 8
th minute when senior
Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas) dribbled around the Bronco defense to set herself up for a one on one with SUNY Delhi keeper Rachael Scoones. The striker's touch was a bit too heavy and it ran too close to the goalie, but Scoones' clearance attempt bounced off Tersegno to give her a second opportunity to put Albany ahead. She controlled the ball well, but in the end couldn't steer an effort on target and the game remained scoreless.
Tersegno had another chance to put the Panthers ahead in the 10
th minute when junior
Sydney Rule (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa) released her on a counterattack, but this time Scoones was up to the task and she made an important save.
It was the Broncos who opened the scoring though in the 49
th minute, when some slick passing opened up the Panther defense and created an opportunity for Delhi's Katie Herba to try a shot. The senior made the most of her attempt, lofting the ball over sophomore keeper
Gabriella Evangelista (Warwick, NY / Warwick Valley High) for her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Albany wasn't able to create too many chances to equalize in the following 40 minutes, absorbing a ton of pressure from Delhi but not executing well enough on the counterattack.
In other women's soccer news, the Panthers were dealt a tough blow today, as the team was notified that star striker
Katie Benson will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Benson was the team's leading scorer and distributor with 12 goals and seven assists.
Women's soccer will have a week off before they host Bryant & Stratton College on Wednesday, October 10
th at 7pm.
