The Men's Basketball team stayed hot on Friday, beating the Central Maine Community College Mustangs 87-82. The Panthers are now just a game under .500 at 4-5, while CMCC is now 7-2.
The firs half was a cagey affair, with each team leading for about eight minutes. ACPHS came out on top with a 49-47 lead heading into the break, thanks to a last-second jumper from senior guard
Kyle Matousek (Jordan-Elbridge, NY / Jordan Elbridge HS). Coach
Brett Barnard had to be happy with his offseason recruiting work during this game, with freshmen
Joel Martineau (Ausable Forks, NY / Ausable Valley HS),
Noah Farnsworth (Phoenix, AZ / North Pointe Prep), and
Phil Georgio (Bayside, NY / Archbishop Molloy) all scoring at least seven points in the opening half. Those three would all go on to finish in double figures.
In the second half, Albany jumped out to their largest lead thanks to a 12-5 in the opening six minutes. This lead would be erased over the course of the next ten minutes, as the Mustangs tied the score at 76 with just under five minutes to play. ACPHS showed their grit in the game's final two minutes, knocking down seven of eight free-throws to go along with a layup by Phil Georgio that pushed them to victory. In the end, this was their second straight win over a team with at least seven wins.
Martineau and Farnsworth finished the game tied for the team-lead in scoring with 14, while Georgio, juniors
Naythan Beltran (Reading, PA / Antietam HS) and
John Ambert (Valley Stream, NY / Archbishop Molloy) all finished with ten. Senior guard
Thomas Chalker (Boundbrook, NJ / Metuchen HS) continues to play the point guard role well, chipping nine assists to go with his six points and five rebounds. Four Mustangs finished in double figures, but as team they hit three less three-pointers than the Panthers, which turned out to make the difference in the game.
Albany will look to extend their winning streak to three today, December 2
nd, when they travel to take on SUNY-Delhi at 3:00pm.
