Benson Scores Game-Winner in 2OT Thriller

Senior Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) scored two goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime to lift ACPHS to a 2-1 win over conference-rival SUNY-ESF. The win improved the Panthers' record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the HVIAC, while the Mighty Oaks fell to 2-2 and 1-1 in the conference.

It was SUNY-ESF who struck first in this tightly-contested contest, when sophomore defender Theresa Ferrigno capitalized on a Panther turnover in their own box to score her first goal of the year. The Panthers equalized in the 25th minute when Benson was released in behind the Mighty Oak defense by junior midfielder Sydney Rule (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa). Benson netted her sixth goal of the year, beating ESF goalie Renee Perrotte. The Panthers outshot the Mighty Oaks 6-3 in the half, but the teams would go into the break even at one apiece.

In the second half, the teams combined for only three shots on goal, all of which were saved by Perotte and Panther sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Evangelista (Warwick, NY / Warwick Valley High). The teams would stay even after regulation, and take their rematch of the 2017 HVIAC Tournament Final into overtime.

SUNY-ESF led the way in the first overtime period, attempting four shots and forcing one save out of Evangelista, but Albany got their second goal in the 102nd minute to give the Panthers their first conference win. As she so often does, Benson picked up the ball inside of her own half and went on a blistering run down the left flank, beating Perotte for her team-leading 7th goal of the year. The Panthers outshot the Mighty Oaks 14-12 overall, and will now be in the pole position to win the #1 seed heading into the conference tournament.

ACPHS went on to beat Pratt Institute 9-0 on Sunday, September 2018. The recap for the game can be found at acphsathletics.com under the schedule tab.
