Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Tim Maisonet | Sports Information Director

Panthers Sunk By Late Game-Winner

Men's basketball dropped their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, losing on a last-second tip-in to Bryant & Stratton-Rochester 69-68. Overall, the Panthers are now 9-10.

The first half was one where neither team was able to build a sizable advantage, with the lead changing six times in just 20 minutes. It did show that the Panthers were going to struggle on the glass against the Bobcats, as they were outrebounded 26-16, but went into the break down only two.

The game began to pick up in the second half, as both teams found their offensive footing. The Bobcats made the first big move with about 14 minutes left when they ripped off a 19-9 run that gave them an 11-point advantage with 8:39 to go, their largest lead of the game. The lead was still at 11 after two free throws by Meleek Mason made the score 67-56 with 5:52 left to go.

ACPHS did not go out quietly though, as they rattled off 12 straight points in the next four minutes to give themselves a one-point lead with 54 seconds remaining. The run was finished with a tough layup by senior guard Kyle Matousek (Jordan-Elbridge, NY / Jordan Elbridge HS), playing in his last collegiate home game. The Bobcats called timeout following Matousek's bucket, hoping to set up the game-winning possession.

Bryant & Stratton did end up getting the two points they needed for victory, coming again from their work on the offensive glass. The hero was forward Dimitri Campbell, who tipped-in a missed three-pointer for his 15th rebound and 12th point of the contest with just 1.2 ticks left on the clock.

All-in-all, Rochester grabbed 51 rebounds compared to just 28 for the Panthers, with 23 of their 51 coming on the offensive side of the ball. They turned those boards into 20 2nd-chance points. The Bobcats also hit 15 of their 40 attempted threes, with guard Manny Sierra accounting for six, good enough for a game-high 20 points.

ACPHS was once again led by Matousek, who finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Albany won the turnover battle 18-5, but it wasn't enough to make up for their shooting from beyond the arc (3 of 15). Senior guard Thomas Chalker (Boundbrook, NJ / Metuchen HS) added 11 points and four assists, while junior guard recorded six points and four steals in 18 minutes of action.

ACPHS will look to bounce back tomorrow night when they travel to New York City to take on Berkeley College at 7pm.
