Beltran Celebrates 1,000th Collegiate Point in Loss to SUNY Delhi

Senior guard Naythan Beltran celebrated scoring his 1,000th collegiate point today, but the SUNY Delhi Broncos spoiled the festivities as they bested the Panthers 86-68. ACPHS is now 6-10 on the season.

Beltran, a Reading Pennsylvania native, hit a two-point jumper at the 14:49 mark of the second half of Thursday's game against SUNY Orange that turned out to be his 1,000th point. The senior captain is now averaging 17.8 ppg this season, a career-best mark that leads the team and is fifth in the HVIAC.

As for the game, Albany executed their game plan early on, and ended up tied at six with the Broncos after a layup from Beltran at 12:29 of the first half. But the Broncos began to impose their shortly thereafter, ripping off a 18-4 run that saw them take a 24-10 lead with seven minutes left in the half. ACPHS went into the break down 42-25 as Delhi heated up.

The second half was much better for Albany, as they still were outscored but put up 43 points of their own. This did little to affect the outcome, but did show that the Panthers can hang with NCAA Division III competition when they're at their best. This resurgence was led by senior point guard John Ambert. The Valley Stream, NY native came out firing and ended up hitting four straight three-point attempts on his way to 14 points in the half and a game-high 17 overall. He also kept the offense going with six assists and three rebounds. On his big day, Beltran finished with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Delhi's standout performance came from forward Mavenson Thurneus, who led his team with 17 points and 12 rebounds. In other news, Bronco guard William Knight also scored his 1,000th collegiate point with his final bucket of the contest. SUNY out-rebounded Albany 54-33, converting their 22 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points.

Albany will look to stop their recent skid this Wednesday, January 22nd, when they host Fisher College at 7:00 PM.
