Portsmouth, NH - Women's basketball
traveled up to New Hampshire for another weekend full of games. After a tough weekend, the Panthers saw an 0-2 record in their first games back after Winter break.
First up for their weekend on the road was against Great Bay Community College. This was their first game coming back from winter break, but that did not stop the Panthers from keeping it close. After the first quarter, the Panthers looked to be in a very good spot, only down by four. This was something the Panthers really have not seen much of so far this season, so it was a great sight after the break. The game did show signs that some rust was present as the Panthers did not shoot well most of this game. As the half drew closer, their defense and ability to keep the scoring close was what had them down by only eight at the half. Out of the half, it seemed like the Panthers were on the way to trying to comeback in this game. They won the third quarter and was able to cut the lead to four points going into quarter four. However, the fourth was not kind to the Panthers, as they were not able to complete the comeback, to finish losing the game 47-37.
Even though the Panthers shooting percentage was not the best, they were able to have some positives to take away from this game. The Panthers had their whole team with 5+ rebounds each, out-rebounding Great Bay by two rebounds. The Panthers were able to grab 17 of their 43 total rebounds on the offensive end.
Clare Snell (Potsdam, NY) lead the Panthers scoring with 15 points, and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Dida Slusrasek (Sarasota, FL) was able to lead the team in rebounding in this game grabbing 12 rebounds to be the only Panther in double rebounding numbers.
South Portland, ME - Following their loss against
Great Bay, the Panthers had to turn around and take on one of the top teams in the nation. This was the second and last game against Southern Maine this season.
This game went exactly how the Panthers last game went against Southern Maine. The Seawolves took command early and just did not look back as they seemed to be consistent throughout the whole game. The Panthers struggled to find their groove, and just could not make a big enough move to really put a dent in this one, as the Seawolves defense was just too dominant. The Panthers were already down a large margin going into halftime, and the turnovers were killer for the Panthers as Southern Maine just took advantage of each one. Southern Maine was just a team able to capitalize on every turnover. The second half was just more of the same, as the Panthers were just struggling to find a way to score over such a good defense.
Dida Slusrasek was the leading scorer for the Panthers in this one, scoring 10.
Emma Russell (Brushton, NY) and
Anna Jensen (Valley Falls, NY) were able to both score 7 each as well.
The Panthers will work to get themselves ready before going on the road against to take on Word of Life on Wednesday, January 25th.
