Albany, NY - The Panthers played the Huskies of Word of Life on Tuesday afternoon. Being a USCAA matchup, the Panthers knew that this game was a big one for their quest to go back to back. The Panthers did just that taking down the Huskies 11-0 by the end of the final horn.
The Panthers right from kick off controlled possession in this game. They were ripping shot, after shot, and putting strong pressure on the Huskies throughout the whole game. In the first minute the Panthers wanted to put quick work in off the corner, but was stopped by the Huskies. A couple minutes later, the Panthers had found their first goal of the game in the ninth minute by
Ka'ena Kehano (Wailuku, HI) that went right by the keeper. Almost ten minutes later,
Julia Roemer (Latham, NY) found her first goal of the game scoring in the eighteenth minute. Roemer would score the next two goals for the Panthers before haltime off assists from Izzy Mancini (Galway, NY) and
Raegan Wendel (Clifton Park, NY) to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was more possession being controlled by the Panthers, but the Huskies saw an amazing, all around performance from their goalie. The goalie for the Huskies totaled 27 saves on the afternoon. The Panthers came out and wanted to put some more goals on the board, and that started in the fifty seventh minute when
Mya Wright (Liverpool, NY) found Kehano for her second goal of the night. Wright found Roemer six minutes later to help Roemer secure her fourth goal, and Wright's second assist. Kehano would lock in her hat trick in the seventy fourth minute. Roemer would score three of the next four goals to finish the game with seven goals which ties her for first for most goals in a single game. The fourth goal of those final four, Roemer was able to find
Shannon Donnelly (Bethlehem, NY) where Donnelly snuck it right past the keeper.
After the game,
Julia Roemer was asked her thoughts before the game and on hitting a new career high and record for most goals in a single game. Her response was "We were just running off the high of winning the other day against Central Maine. We were just hoping we could come out and stay strong and keep that winning momentum." After such an amazing career with the Panthers, Roemer was asked about her thoughts on saying good bye after this season. Roemer's response was "It' sad, honestly I am not ready to say good bye but at the same time I am ready to start my real life and get a job. It is really sad though, I love this team so much and it's going to be hard not being on this pitch next year."
Head coach
Jonathan Woodrow was asked his thoughts on the game, and how it will carry into the Maine Augusta game. He responded by saying "It feels good, I think it is good preparation. The whole idea tonight was just to move the ball, goals are a natural byproduct by keeping possession and moving the ball so we are wel prepared for Sunday." Woodrow was then asked his thoughts on the Seniors we are celebrating in a couple weeks for their last home game. His response was "It will definitely be bittersweet, I think the biggest thing we will miss is currently their leadership. It will be hard to replace these senior players but it makes the time we have together more special."
The Panthers will get a couple days to rest and prepare themselves before heading up to Maine for a YSCC matchup against Maine Augusta on Sunday 10/8.
