Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Panthers Get the Shutout at Home

Albany, NY - Women's soccer took on the Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday afternoon at home. The Panthers were looking to bounce back after tying their last matchup. The Panthers ended up coming away with the win by a score of 4-0.

On Wednesday, the Panthers were gearing up to take on SUNY Cobleskill, and looking to add another win to the column. During the first half, the Panthers wanted to make it a point to strike early, and often. They controlled possession early on and the ball seemed to be in Cobleskills half a majority of the first half. The Panthers looked like they were focused on passing the ball around, and holding onto possession to make sure they were finding quality shots. The first goal of the half came off a corner kick by Junior Izzy Mancini (Galway, NY) that found the foot of Ka'ena Kehano (Wailuku, HI) to put the Panthers up 1-0. A couple minutes passed by, and Freshmen Mya Wright (Liverpool, NY) found the back of the net to help put the Panthers up by 2. The team continued to put the pressure on in the first half, but Cobleskill's defense kept making the stops they needed. The Panthers were still able to put together 12 shots for the half, but were up 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers continued more of the same from the first half with an emphasis on pressure. They continued their strong ball dominant play, and passing. Senior Shannon Donnelly (Bethlehem, NY) was able to score her 7th goal of the season in the 66th minute to give the Panthers a three goal advantage. Shortly after Donnelly's goal, Kehano was able to score again off an assist from Senior Julia Roemer (Latham, NY) to put the Panthers ahead 4-0. Junior goalie Mykala Brodzinski (Toms River, NJ) was able to pick up her second shutout of the season in goal, while getting 5 saves.

After the game, head coach Jonathan Woodrow was asked what kind of momentum this win brings into a busy weekend. Woodrow responded saying, "I think it is a good stepping stone, we are not necessarily where we want to be yet but we are starting to put some things together...and were making some steps in the right direction."

After her two goal performance, Ka'ena Kehano was asked her thoughts on the game after expressing she could feel today was going to be a win. "It was definitely a team effort, I couldn't have scored if my teammates weren't doing good getting me the ball and playing hard on defense. Shout out to my teammates. It is a good change of momentum from our tie, now we can look forward to our next game." Kehano was also asked how this win carries into the weekend against two conference opponents. "It helps, because now we are a little more confident. We got a little beat up, but hopefully with rest, hopefully we come out strong in the next two games."

The Panthers have a busy weekend ahead of them with the first game being against strong rival Paul Smith's College at 5pm in Paul Smith's.
