Box Score 4 South Portland, ME - The Panthers headed to Maine and then New Hampshire for a weekend slate of conference games.
Both basketball teams headed north on Saturday morning for back-to-back games against the SMCC Seawolves. The women tipped off first at 1pm in a game that would be the debut for new head coach J'Neil Sharpe with coach Bruce Perry returning to an assistant role.
Adriana Yuret (Mayfield, NY) led the team in scoring with 12 points on 50% shooting while Samantha Howland (Whitehall, NY) had 9 points and 10 rebounds in her regular season debut. However, the Panthers struggled offensively as they hit only 30% of their shots and made only 1 three-pointer in the game compared to 12 made threes by the Herons. The Panthers also hurt themselves by turning the ball over 29 times, compared to just 11 by the Seawolves. The Herons would go on to win the game 78-36.
The men tipped off shortly after the conclusion of the women's game, but the game had a drastically different outcome. Jalon Munoz (Helotes, TX) led the way with 16 points and 9 boards while Brett Richards (Kinderhook, NY) had 15 points and 13 rebounds. The 3-point shot wasn't falling for the men either, so they resorted to inside the arc where they shot 66.7%. Alex Carrillo (Akron, OH) and Michael Leak (Delanson, NY) combined for 23 points off the bench as the Panthers simply out shot the Seawolves to win 62-53.
The next morning, the Panthers headed to New Hampshire to play the Great Bay Herons. The women played first with a determination to win. The team moved the ball well and played good defense to only allow 41 points by the Herons. The team dropped 57 to secure their first victory of the season.
As for the men, the exhausting game on Saturday tools its toll early on with the team playing pretty tired. They fell behind early on and in a hole too deep to dig themselves out of, losing the game 89-70. The men are now 5-2 on the season.
The women will have the week off to prepare for their next game on Saturday 11/23 against Central Maine Community College while the men's next game will be on Tuesday the 19th against the JV SUNY Canton team.
