Albany, NY - The basketball teams hosted the Central Maine Mustangs this week as the spring semester is now in full swing!
The women played on Wednesday evening in what would be a blowout. Facing an undefeated Mustangs team that went 15 players deep, the Panthers were unable to keep up with the depth of their conference rival.
Throughout the game, the Panthers could not hold on to the ball, committing 45 turnovers to the bigger and faster Mustangs. Freshman Adora Cho (Great Neck, NY) shined bright, dropping 20 points while Ava Gaspie (Mechanicville, NY) had a dozen of her own, but it wasn't enough to outweigh the turnovers. The Mustangs won the game 101-59.
Then the men took on the Mustangs on Friday evening in a much closer game. The first half was a constant back and forth with 11 lead changes and a 2-point halftime lead. At the break, Alex Carrillo (Akron, OH) led all scorers with 11 points.
In the second half, the Panthers pushed their lead to 7 points, but then the Mustangs went on a 19-6 run to reclaim the lead about halfway through the period. The Panthers eventually tied the game with under four minutes to go, but the Mustangs scored three straight buckets in the paint to go on to win the game 77-74.
Carrillo finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds while Clarence Claiborne, Jr. scored 12 points while dishing out 9 assists. Logan Yohe (Delmar, NY) and Josh Bendele (San Antonio, TX) combined for an additional 31 points, falling just short of the victory.
Both teams are right back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host the SMCC Seawolves in a doubleheader at 2 and 4pm.
