Basketball Snaps Losing Streaks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Pottersville, NY - The basketball teams traveled north to take on the WOL Huskies in what would be two much needed wins.

The women tipped off first at 5pm in a game that started pretty slow. Freshman Akosua Adu-Gyamfi (Holden, MA) drilled two three-pointers in the first which would be the team's only field goals in the quarter. However, their defense held the Huskies to only 10 points and the Panthers were down by only two. In the second quarter the Panthers erupted, scoring 23 led by Adu-Gyamfi who scored 14 more points for a total of 20 at halftime. The Huskies once again scored 10 for the quarter bringing the halftime score to 31-20.

The second half was back to the slow pace of the first quarter with the Panthers only mustering 16 points in the entire half.  The Huskies, however, also struggled and scored only 15 in the second half to bring the final score to 47-35.  The win ended a three game losing skid for the Panthers, led by Adu-Gyamfi who finished with 22 points, the second most of her young career.  Samantha Howland (Whitehall, NY) led the team with 9 rebounds and 4 assists while every single player on the team scored at least one field goal.

After the women's victory, the men tipped off in a game that was similarly matched. About 8 minutes into the game, the Panthers found themselves down by six points, but then went on a 15-2 run to take a 7 point lead which they maintained until the halftime buzzer. Led by junior Alex Carrillo (Akron, OH) who had 16 points on 7/9 shooting at the break, the Panthers were finally able to find some rhythm shooting 46% from the field as a team.

The Panthers came out of the break still riding their momentum and pushed their lead to 16 points halfway through the period. The Huskies tried mounting a comeback, cutting the lead down to 6 points, but were ultimately unsuccessful as the Panthers iced the game at the free throw line. Carrillo finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Bendele (San Antonio, TX) and Logan Yohe (Delmar, NY) combined for an additional 29 points. Defense was the key of the game as the Panthers collectively recorded 6 steals and 8 blocks en route to a 71-63 victory, ending a 4-game losing streak.

The pair of wins were much needed for both teams. The men will play next on 2/1 when they travel to SUNY ESF while the women don't play until 2/3 when they head to take on the SUNY Orange.
