Albany, NY - The women's soccer team held their home opener on Friday evening against Mitchell College.
Right from kick off, the Panthers dominated ball control. Freshman Brooke Coon (Stillwater, NY) scored her first collegiate goal about a minute into the game off a rebound. Already with a lead, the team went on to take a dozen more shots before halftime, but none found the back of the net.
In the second half, Hawaii native Ka'ena Kehano (Wailuku, HI) recorded a hat trick to push the Panthers lead to 4-0, including two deep strikes. Not only did the team play well offensively, they played well defensively allowing just 6 shots throughout the game. This time around, it was Emma Ye (Ballston Spa, NY) who led the way, chasing down balls and stopping the opposing offense from creating a play.
The fifth and final goal of the game belonged to Lizbeth Lopez (Staten Island, NY) who cut through about a million defenders to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season. It was a very impressive play to watch unfold.
5-0 was the final score for the Panthers, earning them their first victory of the season. They'll have the weekend to prepare for their next match against Dean College on Monday afternoon.
