Coming into Saturday's men's soccer game, Zach Hecox (New Hartford, NY, New Hartford) had scored three goals in the 2011 season for the ACPHS men's soccer team. By the time the final whistle blew, Hecox had set a single-game record by scoring six goals as the Panthers defeated Vaughn College by a score of 10-1.
Just two minutes into the game, Hecox stole a short goal kick and beat the keeper into the left corner of the net to give ACPHS the early lead. At the 10 minute mark of the first half, Hecox blasted a long shot from outside the box that skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. Eight minutes later, Alessandro Macchiarelli (Broadalbin, NY, Broadalbin-Perth) sent a cross from the right corner that found Hecox who headed the ball into the back of the net. In the next three minutes, Hecox scored two more goals in the next three minutes, giving him an amazing five goals in the first 21 minutes of the game.
Macchiarelli scored a goal of his own in the first half when he struck a low driving shot into the right corner of the net. Vaughn was able to score a late goal in the first half to make the score 6-1 going into halftime.
In the 14th minute of the second half, Neil Kubik (Basom, NY, Pembroke) scored his second goal of the season when he received a pass off of a corner kick and beat both a Warrior defender and keeper to make the score 7-1. In the 20th minute of the second half, Hecox scored the historic goal, as he stole the ball from a Vaughn defender and beat the keeper with a perfectly placed shot.
Craig Laing (Bainbridge, NY, Bainbridge) scored his first career goal in the 28th minute of the second half and was followed by a goal from Almedin Andelija (Utica, NY, Proctor) to complete the scoring for the day. With the victory, ACPHS stays undefeated at 5-0 and also goes to 2-0 in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference.
The previous record of five goals in a single game was held by Craig Konzen, Steve McGrail and Orest Zalusky.
