ACPHS netted 10 times in the first half, cruising past the Berkeley Knights to book their place in the 2016 HVIAC Women's Soccer Championship. Overall, the Panthers now sport a 10-3-1 record, while Berkeley drops to 0-5.
The Panthers scored four times in the opening 11 minutes to put the game out of reach early. Sophomore
Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) was the first to break onto the score sheet in the 5
th minute, with her strike partner and classmate
Erin Tersegno (Webster, NY / Webster Thomas) following suit a minute later. Senior
Kayli Smith (Rome, NY / Rome Free Academy) recorded her second of the season in same minute off an assist from Benson. Benson proceed to grab two more goals in the 11
th and 15
th minutes both unassisted. Senior
Katie Parsels (Rochester, NY / Gates Chili) got on the board in the 22
nd with a penalty kick for her sixth of the year. Sophomore
Cora Bruno (Margaretville, NY / Margaretville Central) was next up in the 26
th, with Benson scoring her fourth and final goal shortly thereafter. To wrap up the half two Panthers scored their first goals of their careers: freshmen
Sydney Rule (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa) and
Cory Parker (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland Central).
After the break, Tersegno netted twice more before the game was called due to rain in the 71
st minute. Tersegno now leads all Panthers with 26 goals on the year. Freshman goalkeeper
Sally Slowinski (Colrain, MA / Mohawk Trail) did not face a shot, but improved to 5-3 in her first season.
In the second semi-final, the SUNY-ESF Mighty Oaks dispatched King's College just as easily, winning 5-0 in the day's second 70-minute game. This sets up a rematch of last year's HVIAC Women's Soccer Final that ACPHS won in penalty kicks. The game will take place at ACPHS Field at 12pm with a short ceremony following the contest.
