ACPHS Falls to SUNY Delhi in Mid-Week Showdown

| By:
Box Score
ACPHS could not get anything going against the tough SUNY Delhi defense, and they lost their first game since September 15th on Wednesday, falling 4-0 to the aforementioned Broncos. Albany is now 7-4-1 on the year, while Delhi improves to 9-3-0.

The Panthers were without senior captain Connor Laughlin (Cohoes, NY / Cohoes High School) tonight, due to his red card near the end of the previous win over SUNY Canton, and it seemed to affect ACPHS all night. Despite this, ACPHS had a few chances early in the game that may have affected the outcome if they had been converted. In the 4th minute, freshman Noah Keith (Rotterdam, NY / CBA) received the ball following a Panther corner and whipped a cross into a dangerous area. Junior Mina Girgis (Canyon Country, CA / John Burroughs HS) was waiting to head the ball having beaten his marker, but Bronco goalie Ryan Hennessy reacted with a diving punch to clear the box for Delhi.

In the 19th minute, Kieth took a corner and again hit a well-placed cross. Senior Zak Giorgi (Whitesboro, NY / Whitesboro High School) was waiting at the back post, but pushed his bullet header just wide. The following goal kick was taken down by Delhi's Joseph Vazquez, who slipped a through ball into Trevor Holdridge. Holdridge picked up his head and realized junior goalkeeper Matt Houlihan (Levittown, NY / Kellenberg Memorial High School) was a bit too far off his line. He chipped the ball just under the roof of the net from about 20 yards out for his third goal of the year. Houlihan was able to keep the deficit at one at a point in the 28th minute, when he made a diving leg save back across his body off a ball that took a fortunate deflection for Delhi.

ACPHS headed into the 2nd half trailing 1-0 and had a few chances to get back into the game, but the Delhi defense could not be unlocked. The Broncos got their second in the 66th minute when Joffre Portilla clipped in a free kick from 35 yards out and Joseph O'Halloran rose above the Panther defense to head the ball above Houlihan. Six minutes later, Joseph Vazquez got his eighth goal of the year from a corner off of a near post cross from David Vazquez. Delhi finished the scoring in the 84th minute when O'Halloran drove home a penalty for his second goal of the game.

With the loss Houlihan is now 6-4-1 on the year, making nine saves in a losing effort. The Panthers only forced Hennessy into two saves, none coming in the first half.

The Panthers get 10 days off before they resume HVIAC play, hosting Berkeley at 5pm on Saturday, October 15th. The Broncos head to Alfred St. this Saturday, October 8th.
