Box Score
ALBANY, NY — ACPHS opened up their 2016 HVIAC Season with a loss on Saturday, falling by a score of 4-1 to The College of New Rochelle Blue Angels. With the win, New Rochelle stay undefeated at 3-0 and 1-0 in the league while the Panthers drop to 1-2 and 0-1 in the HVIAC.
The first chance of the game came for New Rochelle's Nicorey Warren in the 11
th minute. Jovanni Garcia took a shot that was blocked by an ACPHS defender and ended up at the feet of Warren. He took a right-footed curve shot that clanged off the far post, and fellow Blue Angel Cesar Rodriguez could not connect on his follow-up attempt. Warren would not be denied just two minutes later, when Garcia took the ball around the ACPHS defense and got to the byline. He sent in a low cross with Warren sliding in and tucking the ball just underneath the cross bar for his fourth goal in three games.
ACPHS put the pressure on following the 1-0 deficit, with freshman
Austin Myers (Morrisonville, NY / Saranac High) linking up with junior
Jack Hanlon (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland High School). Hanlon put a well-placed shot in the bottom-right corner, but New Rochelle keeper Cristian Perez Del Castillo made a diving save with his fingertips to push the ball wide. The next chance was also Albany's, when senior
Connor Laughlin (Cohoes, NY / Cohoes High School) bent a corner with his right foot which almost found the back of the net. Luckily for the Blue Angels, midfielder Gabriel Lopez was there to clear the ball off the line.
ACPHS unfortunately spurned their chances, and were hit twice more before the break. First in the 24
th minute, Rodriguez got on the scoresheet when the ball fell to his feet following a tackle by the Panthers. He beat junior goalkeeper
Matt Houlihan (Levittown, NY / Kellenberg Memorial High School) in the lower right corner, and ACPHS was down 2-0. New Rochelle's third goal came off a poor pass from
Zak Giorgi (Whitesboro, NY / Whitesboro High School), which was picked off by Jovanni Garcia. Garcia dribbled up to Houlihan all on his own, and slotted home his fourth of the season for a 3-0 lead.
Following the break, Garcia netted again in the 69
th minute from the penalty spot after he was taken down just before getting a shot off from six yards out. He went lower-right with the penalty, and although Houlihan guessed correctly, he was not able to get a hand to it. Albany's Giorgi would atone for his error assisting on the Panther's only goal in the 79
th minute. Giorgi beat a defender and drew in the goalie before putting a perfect low cross in for sophomore
Austin Morley-Sloan (Watertown, NY / Ogdensburg Free Academy). Morley-Sloan just had to pass the ball into an empty net for his second collegiate goal and first of the season.
Houlihan finished with six saves before exiting the game for sophomore
Kevin Frevele (Cooperstown, NY / Cooperstown High School) in the 77
th minute. Frevele made one save, while Houlihan dropped to 1-2 on the season. The Panthers were outshot 26-6 on the game and only managed three shots on goal all day.
ACPHS gets a few days off this week, suiting up again at home on Thursday, September 15
th against Bryant & Stratton College at 7pm. New Rochelle travels back home to take on Lehman College tomorrow, September 11
th at 4pm.
