Hanlon Leads Panthers to 1-0 Win Over Utica

| By:
Box Score Senior Jack Hanlon (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland High School) scored the game's only goal in the 31st minute, giving the Albany College of Pharmacy a 1-0 win over NCAA opponent Utica College. ACPHS got back over .500 and are not 4-3 overall, while Utica is now 5-6.

The Pioneers had the game's first chances, albeit a ways into the first half of the tightly contested affair. ACPHS gave away a free kick just inside the halfway line, which was taken by Utica's Ricky Drake. He aimed his cross at forward Thomas Muller, but the ball was just a few inches too high from being an easy tap in. Utica's next chance came with 18 minutes left in the half when Julian Fonseca whipped a cross off the outside of the post, which may have crept into senior Matt Houlihan's (Levittown, NY / Kellenberg Memorial High School) goal otherwise.

It would be ACPHS that opened the scoring though, on their first real chance of the game. The Panthers won a corner on the far side of the field, and right-footed sophomore Noah Keith (Rotterdam, NY / CBA) looped an in-swinger over Utica goalie Matt Milograno. Unmarked at the back post, Albany's Jack Hanlon met the ball on the volley to tap it into the empty net, his 2nd goal of the year. Reid LaPlante (Chateaugay, NY / Chateaugay Central High School) had two golden chances to double the Panthers' advantage in the closing ten minutes of the period, one that was saved well by Milograno and one cross he couldn't quite connect with, and ACPHS would take their one-goal advantage into the break.

Great defending in the 2nd half by the Panthers got them over the line in the end, with a few plays in particular standing out. Pioneers midfielder Zackery Caporale created one with a pass that split ACP's defense and sent Utica's Bita Gazashvila free on goal. Ever alert, sophomore Andrew Lynch (Colchester, VT / Colchester) raced over to help out his fellow defensemen and win possession of the ball before Gazashvila got his shot away. The 2nd play was made by Houlihan, who dove and intercepted a pass across the face of the goal that was waiting to be tapped in by two Utica attackers. Houlihan made six saves in the win, five in the 2nd half, and is now 4-3 on the year.

ACPHS takes on another non-conference opponent tomorrow, September 27th, when they face Florida National in Albany at 7pm.
