Albany, NY - Women's basketball drops home opener against Southern Maine Community College. In just their second game of the season, they faced off against one of the better teams in the YSCC.
Women's basketball was trying to once again find their footing as their season gets underway, however it had to come against one of the top teams in the conference. Southern Maine jumped out to an early lead, and holding the Panthers scoreless for the first 4 minutes of play. The Panthers however, showed some signs that they could play well defensively by only allowing 13 Seawolves points in the first quarter.
After the first quarter though, the Seawolves started shooting the ball well, and playing to their strengths. As for the Panthers, turnovers were an issue for them as the game progressed. The Panthers were getting full court pressed, and were trying to find answers to get by it. Again, this only being their second game of the season against this type of team provides great moments to work on in practice.
Throughout the second quarter, the Panthers showed signs of offensive potential as they were able to start getting more shots up and finding the bottom of the net. Most of the starters scored throughout the quarter, and the ball movement was much better than the previous quarter. Although the Seawolves also were finding the bottom of the net, the Panthers had some positives going into half. 39-16 was the score as the horn hit for halftime.
Going into the second half, it was more of the same from the first half. The Seawolves kept up the pressure of full court press, and the Panthers were trying to find a way around it. This was the half where the Seawolves started attacking the inside of the paint, where a majority of there points came from in the second half. It seemed as if no matter what defense the Panthers were throwing at the Seawolves, the ball was always going in. As the horn hit zero, the Panthers were devastated by the score on the board.
The Panthers knew it wasn't going to be an easy matchup against this team. They tried to find ways around the press, and tried to find ways to get shots off. The Seawolves just made it impossible for them. Dida Slusrasek (Sarasota, FL) led the Panthers with 14 points, and grabbed 5 rebounds.
The Panthers will have some time off for Thanksgiving break, while enjoying some turkey, they will prepare themselves for a weekend in Maine where they first start off the trip facing Central Maine Community College, Friday, December 2.
