Albany, NY - A new season for Women's Volleyball opened up at home for the Panthers this year in a single match against the Word of Life Huskies. The Panthers return to the court for their Sophomore season with plenty of returners and new faces!
The Panthers opened up the match with a new look this year, with more control and team play that saw a run kick things off in set one. Set one saw the Panthers lead the charge early and start running away with the set as we only saw 2 lead changes and 3 ties. The Panthers were led by new comer
Morgan Bohlke (Glenville, NY) who added a lot of charge between her spikes and serves as the main set up for the Panthers attack. The Panthers took advantage of the Huskies early mistakes and won the set 25-22.
The Panthers opened up the second set how they finished the first, with some service aces, and kills to give themselves an early lead in the set. YSCC 2023 All Conference honorable mention
Kathryn Braun (Guilderland, NY) led the way in the second set with a couple service aces for the Panthers. Braun also recorded assist after assist during the set, and finished with 18 assists tying her career best dating back to last year against Great Bay Community College. The Panthers finished the sets on great serves by
Vidhika Khemani (St. Thomas, USVI) and great defense by Freshman
Angelina Tamburro (Hudson, NY) that saw Tamburro finish the match with a school record 48 digs. The Panthers took home set two by a score 25-21.
The Huskies came out with a new plan of attack in the third set, and it worked for them. The Panthers struggled to get a good rally of points going in the third set until it was 11-5 in favor of the Huskies. The Panthers were able to rally back and tie it up at 11, as then the game went back and forth for the rest of the set. The Huskies ran away with the set after back and forth play to take home the third set 25-22.
The Panthers opened up the fourth set with urgency as they came out firing and set up Bohkle and
Abigail Kievit (Oneonta, NY) for a bunch of kills to finish with 7 (Bohlke) and 8 kills (Kievit) to lead the way for the Panthers as they won the season opener 25-23.
After the game, Head Coach
Glenn Warnock was asked about the season opener win and what impact the new comers Tamburro, and Bohlke had with the team and he said "Before preseason, I knew both of them would have an impact on the team. Morgan is a very strong offensive player, but they really sure up our passing and defense, and everything stems from that in Volleyball."
The Panthers head to Concord, NH next for a tri-match at NHTI on September 14th!
