Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Basketball Teams Begin Weekend Slew of Games

Albany, NY - The men's basketball team traveled to Russell Sage on Friday night while the women hosted Holyoke Community College on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers tipped off against their Albany opponent at 7pm Friday in a game where the Panthers got off to another slow start. Within the first seven minutes, they found themselves down 19-3. Once they finally got some offense flowing, the Gators got even hotter and pushed their lead to 22.  At the break the Panthers found themselves down 51-30.

The second half was far more even, with the Gators' lead fluctuating between 20 and 26 points until the final minute. They had an answer for every time the Panthers got something to go their way.  The Gators ultimately won the game 84-67 in a blowout.  Nathan Lynes (Miami, FL) led the team in scoring with 15 while Chase Tamashiro (Kane'ohe, HI) added 10 of his own. The team collectively had only 12 assists against 23 fouls and 28 turnovers.

The next day, the women's basketball team tipped off against the Holyoke Cougars at 12:30pm in a game that was far more evenly matched. Freshman Akosua Adu-Gyamfi (Holden, MA) scored 9 points in the first to give the Panthers a 14-11 lead after one. In the second quarter, the Cougars flipped the script and outscored the Panthers 20-8 to secure a 31-22 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Cougars built a 36-25 lead, but then the Panthers caught fire. They went on a 19-0 run that ran into the fourth quarter behind freshman Alexis McCarthy (Green Island, NY) who scored 8 of the team's 19 points. Now with an 8-point lead, the Panthers rode that to the end of the game where they wound up winning by a score of 53-49 to remain undefeated on the year. Adu-Gyamfi would finish with a stellar 26 points while Adora Cho (Great Neck, NY) and Ava Gaspie (Mechanicville, NY) combined for 14 points and 12 assists.

Both teams will travel up to New Hampshire to take on the NHTI Lynx in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at noon.
