BOX SCORE
History was made on Saturday as the ACPHS women's basketball team won the College's first ever national championship with a 60-54 victory over Berkeley College in USCAA National Championship Tournament.
Alyson Johnson scored a game-high 19 points and was named Tournament Most Valuable Player as the Panthers completed a magical 2012-2013 season with a 19-5 record.
Johnson, as she has done all season and throughout her entire career, led ACPHS with her hot shooting from the outside and she scord the first eight points of the game for the Panthers to help the team jump out to an early lead. ACPHS was able to use Johnson's shooting (14 points in the first half), and strong inside play from
Alexa Schooley, who scored eight points in the opening half, to take a 33-26 lead into the break. The Panthers also made all seven of their free throw attempts to help build the lead against the Knights.
In the second half with the defense keyed on stopping Johnson, the rest of the team stepped up to pick up the scoring.
Kelsey Johnson hit a number of big jump shots down the stretch and finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists without committing a turnover. Schooley finished with 12 points, while
Taylor Sullivan added 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
In addition to
Alyson Johnson being named Tournament MVP, Schooley and Sullivan were named to the All-Tournament team.
"The 2012-2013 women's basketball team will go down in history at ACPHS," said Ryan Venter, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "This group of 11 student-athletes, and three coaches has brought the women's basketball program and the entire Department of Athletics to a new level with this national championship and the entire ACPHS community is so proud of all of their accomplishments."
