ACPHS Opens Season with Win against SUNY Adirondack

Box Score Sophomore Dannie Griffin (Paramus, NJ / Paramus Catholic) filled up the stat sheet as the Panthers beat the SUNY Adirondack Timberwolves 51-38 at Albert M. White Gymnasium on Tuesday. Both teams playing their first games of the season, ACPHS improves to 1-0 while the Wolves drop to 1-1.

It was a sloppy 1st quarter for both teams, but three Panther turnovers gave the Wolves a chance to jump out to a 9-3 lead five minutes into the game. ACPHS closed the quarter scoring five unanswered, to cut the deficit to one going into the second quarter. The Wolves would lead until the three minutes left in the half, until The Panthers went on an 11-2 scoring run to finish the half. Kicked off by freshman Katie Walker (Canton, CT / Canton), who stole the ball from Wolves' PG Shannon Curley and hit the fast break layup to tie the score at 17. A three by sophomore Allie Mitchell (Melrose, NY / Tamarac) and five straight points from senior Rochelle Whitton (Hermon, NY / Hermon-De Kalb) gave the Panthers a 25-19 advantage at half.

ACPHS ran away with the game in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Wolves 14-3. Griffin was the driving force, grabbing two rebounds, recording two steals, and adding a bucket and an assist. The quarter was capped by Whitton off of the Griffen assist, and the Panthers were up 17 going into the 4th quarter. ACPHS would stretch their lead all the way to 18 after a jumper by sophomore Abbey Healey (Argyle, NY / Argyle), but took their foot off the gas a bit near the close. The Panthers did enough to preserve the 13 point win and their first of the season.

Griffin finished the game with eight points on 3-7 shooting, adding 14 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and six steals. Whitton led the Panthers with 12 points on 4-13 shooting, adding four assists and five steals of her own. The Panthers' press defense was on full display, forcing the Wolves to commit 40 turnovers.
